Alumni News & Notes

Alumni visitors regularly visit St. Vincent's or write to us and share their stories. We are always pleased to see them - and to hear about their lives here and since. On this page, we will post notes from visitors and attempt to share information that would be of special interest to those who spent growing-up years at St. Vincent Home for Children.

  • Recent alumni visitors to St. Vincent's included five siblings who were at St. Vincent's in the 50s. Albert Ruhl, Kathy Ruhl Barmann, Mary Theresa Ruhl Johnson, Ann Ruhl Woody and Dorothy Ann Ruhl Chesley, as all visitors, were especially pleased to visit the Chapel of the Sacred Heart, which holds a special place in the hearts of all who visit the Home.
  • Board Chair John Noce, Executive Director Chris Blake and Development Director Jo Curran visited the Provincial Motherhouse of the Sisters of Christian Charity in Wilmette, Il recently. Sister Virginia Kuhn, Sister Janice Boyer and Sister Joan Kessler shared stories about their experiences at St. Vincent's and helped to fill in historical information about the Home. They and Provincial Sister Mary Clement were generous with their time and hospitality and their generosity was much appreciated.
  • John Koller's daughter, Dorothy Cassin, recently advised us of the death of her father, who died in 2003 at the age of 93 and told us of his story. He was a resident of St. Vincent Home for Children at its founding location on Hogan Street. Mr. Koller came to the United States with his mother and father on the Titanic. His father died in the crash and his mother placed him in St. Vincent's when he was 4. Later, his mother remarried and John lived with his mother and step-father. His birth name was Steven John Geringer, but he changed his name at the age of 13. His step-sister is Sr. Mary Paul Schmitt.
